I made an announcement at the end of June that I was leaving my corporate day job without having another job lined up. Was it a stupid idea? Definitely not. The day I walked out of the office was the day I felt free.
And I've been living that 'free' life all summer. No work. No need to set the alarm. No school for my son. Days at the beach. Coffee dates. Pyjama mornings. Lazy days. It was bliss.
However, everything has to come to an end - the summer ended, my son started a new school, and that led me to search for another job.
Last week, I started working for a company doing a job I've never done before, working less hours a day, commuting a total of fifteen minutes there and back each day, and in an environment where work stays at work (I was told to leave my laptop in the office every night!). Once 4p.m. rolls around (3.30p.m. on a Friday), everyone logs off, goes home and enjoys what's left of the day. No calls after work. No need to log back on to check something. No taking work home.
And despite the hours, the work and the ethics are exactly what I was looking for in a job, I wasn't quite prepared for how draining starting a new role is. Getting used to new people, new responsibilities and a new set of clients, as well as navigating the new school routine for my son, has left me feeling wrung out. During the week, I simply haven't had the energy to write (although I do have more time now!), so it felt good to sit at my keyboard today. I wrote crap, created a couple of posts for social media next week and made sure all portals I use are up to date.
Today, I felt like a writer again.
