Many of you know me from Wattpad, where I first uploaded Crush. I was nervous about sharing the story with the world back in 2023 and had never expected Asher and Oliver to be so popular with readers. Crush was my first ever long story and I'd changed the plot many times, then deleted it, uploaded it, to only delete it and upload it once more! At the time, I just couldn't decide if I really wanted people to read it. But I'm so glad I ignored my self-doubt because Asher and Oliver's story seems to have found a way into reader's hearts.
Since then, I've uploaded a total of nine books on Wattpad, all with varying degrees of success (some more successful than others). A book's success on Wattpad helped me to determine what readers preferred, so I knew how to move forward with my writing career.
Although the Wattpad community, for the most part, is supportive, over the past few weeks, my stories have seen an increase in homophobic comments, racial slurs and immature remarks. The number of users I have blocked this year alone is far more than I’ve ever had to block on Wattpad since I joined the platform many years ago.
Boasting about reading a mature book when you are not is ridiculous and making hateful comments about a person’s race or sexual orientation is downright spiteful. I will stand for neither. I keep my public spaces, such as Wattpad, inclusive and welcoming for all. I will always strive to keep my profiles a safe space, yet they can’t be if I allow nasty and spiteful comments in my works.
With this in mind, I will be taking my completed works down permanently from Wattpad in the summer. I will finish my current story, Not The Same, so that anyone following and reading (and genuinely enjoying it) the story can finish it, but that book will probably go, too, once it is completed later in the year.
This isn’t a decision I’ve taken lightly. I have gained so many wonderful readers (and friends) on Wattpad and will miss them all terribly. I want my readers to feel safe and celebrated when reading my work - the last thing I want is for them to come across judgement for enjoying something that others don’t like.
If you don’t like my work, that’s completely fine and I wish you all the best. It honestly doesn’t bother me. My work is not for everyone. But I won’t stand for the behaviour I have seen of late on this platform.
If you’re genuine and wish to read my books, head on over to Weink where you can read them for free (and no hate allowed!). Also, feel free to follow me on Instagram or BlueSky, where I post regular updates on my work.
I’m sorry to have to do this, and I hope you all understand my reasons for doing so.
Until next time, keep your head in a book - the real world ain’t all that!
